Three landmarks of lower Broadway appear together on this sheet: St. Paul's Church, P. T. Barnum's museum, and the Astor House. St. Paul's Chapel, completed in 1766 near Fulton Street, is the oldest church building still standing in Manhattan, and it came through the great fires of 1776 and 1835. Barnum opened his American Museum a short walk north in 1841, and the Astor House, built by John Jacob Astor and opened in 1836, was among the city's first large hotels. The record's date and attribution are unverified, so the sheet is best read as a general view of the street around 1850.
