Federal Hall, at the east end of Wall Street, is the building this view centers on, with Trinity Church's spire rising nearby. The hall had been New York's City Hall before it was remodeled to house the new federal government, and George Washington took the presidential oath on its balcony in April 1789. The title dates the scene to that year, but the shelflist card records no date, so the view may show the scene as it looked then or be a later rendering of it. The two landmarks side by side show how closely civic and religious life sat together in lower Manhattan.
