Trinity Church, at the head of Wall Street in lower Manhattan, is the subject here, shown from an elevated vantage that flattens the city into a dense web of rooftops and streets. The church was completed in 1846 in the Gothic Revival style and was for a time the tallest structure in the city, its spire rising well above the commercial blocks around it. Views like this one, taken from above, were popular in the nineteenth century because they let viewers take in the whole growing city at once. Notice how the church's steeple anchors the composition, marking a point where the old Dutch and English street pattern met the expanding financial district.
