Looking south from the Battery, the tip of Manhattan, this chromolithograph surveys the harbor where the city's shipping once converged. Published by Currier & Ives around 1872, it was drawn by Charles R. Parsons and Lyman W. Atwater, whose names appear on the image itself. The firm built its reputation on popular color prints of American life, and views like this one gave urban audiences a bird's-eye picture of a port that was then central to the nation's commerce. Its layered colors, built from separate stones, show how much detail the process could carry across a broad waterfront.
