Columbus Circle, where Broadway, Eighth Avenue and Central Park South meet at the southwest corner of the park, is the setting here, shot looking south across the intersection around 1913. Irving Underhill, the photographer credited on the record, was a working commercial photographer who documented New York street scenes in the early twentieth century, and this view captures the busy junction as the city's traffic and streetcar lines were reshaping it. The Columbus monument that gives the circle its name stood at its center, anchoring a crossing that was becoming one of Manhattan's most important points of arrival.
