Columbus Circle, where Broadway, Eighth Avenue and Central Park West meet at the southwest corner of Central Park, is seen here from a point looking south. The centerpiece is the monument to Christopher Columbus, a marble statue by Gaetano Russo set on a tall column and dedicated in 1892 for the 400th anniversary of his voyage. By the early 1920s the circle was a busy traffic hub on the edge of the growing midtown theater and hotel district, so the picture captures a city street being reshaped by heavier traffic. The photograph was made by Irving Underhill, whose copyright notice appears on the original caption card.
