Looking south from the Battery, the rounded tip of Manhattan, this lithograph sets the viewer high above the water to take in the whole harbor at once. Currier & Ives issued it in 1892, during the firm's late years, when bird's-eye views of American cities were a popular product. Such prints were valued for showing a busy port at a glance, and the harbor here would have been crowded with steamships, ferries, and sailing vessels reflecting New York's standing as the country's leading port.
