From the Battery, the park at the island's southern tip, this chromolithograph looks south over the harbor from a high vantage point that takes in the whole waterfront at once. Currier & Ives issued many such panoramas in the 1870s, when New York was the country's busiest port and crowded with steamships, sailing vessels, and ferries. The artists, Charles R. Parsons and Lyman W. Atwater, whose names appear on the image itself, worked in the bird's-eye tradition that made these views popular with buyers who wanted a picture of the city's growing commerce. Look closely at the piers and rigging to see how much shipping the harbor carried.
