Grand Central Terminal's main concourse, photographed looking south, shows the station's vast interior as it was in its first decade and a half of service, before the 1913 opening that is usually cited as the building's completion. The Detroit Publishing Company, which specialized in color-tinted views and large-format scenes of American places, made this glass-plate negative on a camera of the sort that could capture the full width of such a hall. The original Beaux-Arts building, designed by Reed and Stem and Warren and Wetmore, was built to separate suburban commuters from the lines of trains beneath, and its concourse was meant to impress arriving travelers with its scale and light.
