Commuters bound for the suburbs on New York Central trains passed through this entrance to the concourse at Grand Central Terminal, the station that opened in 1913 on the site of the older Grand Central Depot. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass dry plate negative, and its photographers recorded American cities, railroads and scenery in the years around 1910. Concourses like this one were built to move large crowds quickly, and the wide, high-ceilinged space shows how much planning went into the station's circulation.
