The lower-level suburban concourse of Grand Central Terminal, where New York Central commuter trains came and went, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The terminal's Beaux-Arts building opened in 1913, and the Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large-format views of American cities and landscapes, made this plate in the years around that time. Glass negatives like this one recorded the scale of the station's spaces and show how central rail travel was to daily life in the city.
