The west balcony above the main concourse of Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan was photographed in the years after the station opened in 1913, when the New York Central's Beaux-Arts terminal was still new. The concourse was built to move large crowds of commuters and long-distance travelers through one great hall, and its balconies gave a view down onto the flow of people below. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its broad photographic record of American cities, railroads and landscapes.
