This 8 x 10 inch glass negative records Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, a building that opened in 1913 on the site of an older depot. Its Beaux-Arts design made the station a showpiece of the railroad era. The record notes that the image appears to be a copy of a heavily retouched photograph, which suggests the Detroit Publishing Company reworked the view before reproducing it. The company sold large-format views of American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, and this plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
