Few vantage points in old Manhattan offered as wide a sweep as a church cupola, and this view takes in the city in three directions at once. Engravings and prints like this were popular in the nineteenth century, when artists worked from high positions to show a fast-growing town as a crowded skyline of roofs, steeples and chimneys. Look closely at the street grid, the waterfront and the church spires, since these details record how the city looked before later buildings replaced much of it.
