Wesley Chapel on John Street is the building this engraving sets out to show, a plain brick meetinghouse in lower Manhattan that is often called the first Methodist church in America. The chapel was built in 1768 by the city's early Methodist congregation, which had gathered under the preaching of Philip Embury and then Richard Boardman and Joseph Pilmore, and it became a central place of worship for the movement in the colonies. Wood engravings like this one were widely used in the nineteenth century to show churches and civic landmarks, so the view is likely meant to record a building that already carried real historic weight.
