John Hughes is named in this lithograph's title as the first archbishop of New York, a distinction that dates to 1850, when the city's Catholic diocese was raised to archdiocese status. Born in Ireland, Hughes spent his tenure building schools, a college, and the cathedral on Fifth Avenue, and he was a forceful public figure who clashed with city leaders over public school Bible reading and the funding of Catholic education. The print was issued by Currier & Ives, a firm known for inexpensive, hand-colored pictures of American life and personalities, and its color was applied by hand.
