Samuel Provoost is identified here as the first Episcopal bishop of New York, a post he took up after being consecrated in England in 1787, when the American Episcopal Church was still organizing itself after the Revolution. The engraving was made expressly for *The Evergreen*, so it was meant to accompany printed text as a frontispiece-style likeness rather than stand alone. Its date, placed between 1800 and 1815, falls in the last years of Provoost's life, when he had largely withdrawn from active church duties. The print is a useful record of how early American church leaders were presented to the public.
