Michael Augustine Corrigan is shown here with the title of Archbishop of New York, a post he held from 1885 until his death in 1902. Before that he had served as bishop of Newark, New Jersey, which is why the record also lists that diocese among its subjects. The portrait is a photomechanical print, probably a photogravure, a process that transferred photographs to metal plates for printing with fine tonal detail. Prints like this were widely sold in the 1880s, when Catholic leaders in New York and the surrounding region were growing in public influence.
