The photograph centers on the Lincklaen House, a hotel named for John Lincklaen, the land agent who helped found the village of Cazenovia in central New York in the 1790s. Its street frontage also holds a post office, a coal dealer, a pharmacy, and a bank, so the view captures a small village's commercial core in a single row of facades. Taken in the 1930s, when the Great Depression was squeezing rural merchants, the picture shows how older brick and wood buildings were still doing everyday business. Look at the signs and storefronts for clues about the goods and services people relied on.
