A branch of the 19th Ward Bank on Seventy-second Street in New York is the subject of this interior view, one of the few records in the Detroit Publishing Company collection that shows the inside of a financial institution rather than a street or landmark. The company, based in Detroit, made large numbers of views of American cities and businesses from the 1890s into the 1910s, often for promotional and commercial use. Early twentieth-century neighborhood banks typically display marble counters, brass teller grilles and high ceilings that signaled stability to depositors, and the image is worth studying for those details. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative format gives it unusually fine detail.
