A women's banking area is the subject of this view of the Ladies' Department at the 34th Street National Bank in New York City. Some banks of the early 1900s set aside separate counters or rooms for women customers, a sign of how many women were then handling household money and their own savings. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American streets, businesses and interiors across the country around 1900. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
