Looking toward the rear of the Thirty-fourth Street National Bank, this interior view captures the working space of a New York City bank in the first decade of the twentieth century. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format prized for the sharp detail it gave large architectural interiors. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to document cities, streets and commercial buildings, made the plate. Banks of this period often used marble, brass and tall ceilings to suggest permanence and public trust, so the room's design is as much a subject here as its activity.
