Thirty-fourth Street was one of Manhattan's busiest crosstown routes, running through the shopping district that had grown up around Herald Square by the early 1900s. This view is credited to the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold photographs and color prints of American cities and landscapes, many of them as postcards and travel souvenirs. Street scenes from this period typically record the mix of pedestrians, wagons, streetcars, and dense storefronts of a city growing quickly before the First World War. For historians, such images preserve the ordinary texture of urban life at a time when New York was changing rapidly.
