A view looking south down Fifth Avenue from Thirty-sixth Street, the photographer's camera set among the street's commercial frontages in the years before 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, sold views of American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, and its street scenes often record how busy shopping and business districts looked before automobiles dominated them. Fifth Avenue in this stretch was changing as retail and commercial uses expanded northward, so the plate captures a moment of transition in the city's streetscape. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
