Fifth Avenue at Thirty-third Street was one of the busier stretches of Manhattan in the early 1900s, when the avenue was becoming a center of hotels, shops, and commercial buildings. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded American cities, towns, and landscapes for sale as postcards and travel views. The company's negatives show how the street looked during the years when motor traffic was still sharing the road with horse-drawn carriages and streetcars. The negative was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
