Fifth Avenue at Forty-second Street was one of the busiest crossings in New York in the early 1900s, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative likely records the mix of horse-drawn vehicles, streetcars and pedestrians that filled it. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, produced views like this for a national audience eager to see American cities, many sold as postcards and color prints. Nearby, the New York Public Library's Beaux-Arts building was going up on its site during these years, reshaping the block. Street scenes from this period offer a detailed record of how the city moved before the automobile came to dominate its avenues.
