At the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 57th Street, a sign on a pole at the right marks the cross street, and the view runs north toward the edge of Central Park. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American cities and landscapes, many of them as postcards and travel prints. Dated only to between 1900 and 1920, the picture captures a stretch of Fifth Avenue then known for its fashionable mansions and shops. The cataloger supplied the title, but the sign confirms the cross street.
