This view looks north up Fifth Avenue from 51st Street in New York, with the dwellings and church buildings noted in its record lining the avenue. The stretch near 50th Street was home to St. Patrick's Cathedral, completed in the 1880s, and by about 1900 the avenue was shifting from a row of private residences toward a commercial and institutional corridor. The image is a large glass dry plate negative, 11 by 14 inches, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and landscapes around the turn of the century. Its large format gives unusually fine detail in the street and building facades.
