Set at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Fifty-ninth Street, facing the newly developed Grand Army Plaza, the Plaza Hotel was one of the city's most fashionable addresses when this negative was made. Henry J. Hardenbergh designed the hotel, which opened in 1907, and its limestone façade and mansard roofs became a landmark of Edwardian luxury. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative, photographed American cities and scenery for a national market, so the picture also shows the avenue in the years when horse-drawn carriages still shared the street with motor cars. The title was supplied by a cataloger, not taken from an original caption.
