The stretch of Fifth Avenue where it meets the Plaza was among New York's most fashionable addresses, and this glass negative looks north toward Central Park from that corner. The Plaza Hotel, opened in 1907 at the park's southern edge, gave the scene its grand focal point and drew wealthy travelers and society figures. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its broad survey of American cities and scenery, made pictures like this one, and this negative was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. The title was devised by a cataloger, so the date is approximate and placed between 1910 and 1930.
