A sign on the building at left reading "Cawstan's Ostrich Farm" sets this view apart from the other Fifth Avenue street scenes in the collection. Ostrich plumes were a prized fashion item in the early twentieth century, and shops like this one sold feathers and trimmings for hats and gowns to well-off shoppers along the avenue. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture sometime between about 1900 and 1915, sent photographers across the country to record cities and streets, often for picture postcards and souvenir books. The title was supplied by a cataloger, so the sign on the building is the best guide to what the street looked like then.
