Fifth Avenue at West Forty-fifth Street captures a stretch of Manhattan where commercial life was thickening in the early twentieth century, a few blocks from the theater district then taking shape around Times Square. The view survives on a 5 by 7 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its broad survey of American cities and landscapes around 1900. Because the title was devised by a cataloger, the specific buildings shown are best checked against the record, but the scene still shows how storefronts and street traffic shared the avenue in these years.
