The corner of Fifth Avenue and Forty-second Street sits where the New York Public Library's main building would later rise, and the crossing was already one of the city's busiest in these years. The record lists buses and carriages among its subjects, a pairing that captures the avenue in transition, when horse-drawn traffic still shared the street with early motor vehicles. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely around the turn of the twentieth century recording American cities and towns for commercial sale.
