The view shows the Twenty-sixth Street side of the Detroit Photographic Company's New York studio at 218 Fifth Avenue, a building that served as the firm's eastern base. The company, which later adopted the name Detroit Publishing Company, was known for its large-format views of American cities, landscapes and resorts, and for licensing the photochrom process, a Swiss method for producing color prints from photographs. This glass negative, numbered 32607 and dated somewhere between 1900 and 1910, was part of that output. Its street-level framing gives a useful record of the commercial storefronts and building styles of Manhattan's Fifth Avenue district in the early twentieth century.
