Rather than a street or landmark, this view shows the inside of a showroom at 234 Fifth Avenue in New York, the city office of the Detroit Publishing Company. The firm, renamed from the Detroit Photographic Company in 1905, sold color prints made by the photochrom process, which reproduced American scenery, cities and resorts. A Manhattan office gave the company a place to show its wares to dealers and buyers. Because the image is a glass negative, its detail of shelving and display arrangement offers a useful look at how a commercial space of that era was organized.
