Fifth Avenue in Manhattan is the setting, and the storefront at number 229 belonged to the Detroit Photographic Company, which used the space to show its views to buyers. The Detroit firm sold landscapes and city scenes as tinted photochrom prints, a Swiss color process it held the American rights to around the turn of the century. This 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative, dated between 1900 and 1905, records the showroom where that trade took place. The Library of Congress received it in 1949 as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
