Graul's art store is shown here at its storefront, though the sources disagree on the address: the title gives 217 Fifth Avenue, while a later cataloguer's note places it at 137 West 23rd Street. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the negative, was a commercial firm known for photographs and hand-colored photochrom prints of American cities and landscapes. Its large glass negatives, exposed around 1900 to 1905, record signs, window displays and street life with enough detail to be useful to historians of New York's commercial streets.
