Where Broadway meets Fifth Avenue beside Madison Square, this view records one of Manhattan's busiest crossings in the years before the district's tall office buildings fully took shape. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American cities and landscapes that it sold to travelers and collectors. The date range of 1900 to 1910 places the scene in an era when streetcars, horse-drawn wagons and pedestrians shared these avenues. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
