Worth Monument, a marble obelisk raised in Madison Square in 1857 to honor General William Jenkins Worth, anchors this view looking north, where Broadway and Fifth Avenue run together toward the square at right. By about 1905, the area around Madison Square had grown into a busy commercial and hotel district, and its avenues carried streetcars, wagons and foot traffic. The Detroit Publishing Company made the photograph on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a large format that captured fine detail in the buildings and the crowded street. The result is a useful record of Manhattan's streetscape at the turn of the century.
