Fifth Avenue's Sunday crowds meet the spires of St. Patrick's Cathedral in this view, and the catalog ties the scene to Easter, when churchgoers and strollers filled the avenue. The cathedral, completed in 1879 at Fifth Avenue and 50th Street, anchored a stretch of the avenue that New York's wealthier families favored for promenading. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around 1900 and sold their views widely. It offers a useful record of street life in the decade when motorcars were only beginning to join the carriages and streetcars on the avenue.
