Fifth Avenue's Easter parade, with St. Patrick's Cathedral rising behind the crowd, anchors this view of New York on a holiday morning. Churchgoers and strollers in their finest clothes filled the avenue in the years around 1900, when turning out in new spring outfits after Sunday services was a well-established city custom. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many views of American cities for sale to travelers and publishers, recorded scenes like this on large 8 by 10 inch glass negatives. The plates captured fine detail in the hats, coats, and street life, and the cathedral's Gothic spires give the scene a sense of place.
