The Plaza Hotel stands at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, and this glass negative records it alongside the park in the decade before the building's 1907 opening. Architect Henry J. Hardenbergh designed the hotel, which quickly became a landmark of New York's wealthy society. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its views of American cities and landscapes, made the image on an 8 by 10 inch plate, a format valued for its fine detail. Placing a grand hotel at the edge of Central Park reflected the money gathering along the avenue at the time.
