Facing Grand Army Plaza, where Fifth Avenue meets Central Park, the Plaza Hotel was one of the best-known landmarks of early twentieth-century New York. It opened in 1907, designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in a French Renaissance style. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities and scenery in those years, and it is dated to roughly 1910 to 1920. The negative reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, preserving a view of the hotel and its street during a period when grand hotels were central to the city's social life.
