This view shows the Claremont Inn on Riverside Drive, a building that stood on the Hudson bluffs in Upper Manhattan, where the drive ran along the river above the city's growing residential streets. The image is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm active in the early twentieth century that produced many large-format views of American cities, resorts and landmarks. Its date falls somewhere between 1900 and 1910, a period when Riverside Drive was becoming one of the city's more fashionable addresses. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
