Riverside Drive, the long road that follows the Hudson along Manhattan's West Side, is the focus here, with Riverside Park stretching beside it. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that produced large numbers of views of American towns, parks and scenic routes in the early twentieth century, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1905 and 1915. Riverside Drive was laid out in the late 1800s as a carefully landscaped boulevard, and the park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, was meant to give residents a green stretch above the river. The view shows how the city's planned open space met the growing residential avenues of the period.
