Grant's Tomb, the mausoleum of President Ulysses S. Grant, anchors this view of Riverside Drive, where the broad parkway runs along the Hudson River on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The tomb was dedicated in 1897 and was still fairly new when this glass-plate negative was made between 1900 and 1910, part of the Detroit Publishing Company's large effort to document American places for color and black-and-white postcards and travel books. The picture shows how the drive and its monument were meant to look as a showpiece of the city's northern park system.
