Grant's Tomb rises at the right edge of this view, the granite memorial to Ulysses S. Grant that opened in 1897 on a bluff above the Hudson. Beside it stretches Riverside Park, the long strip of public ground that Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed along the river on Manhattan's West Side. The Detroit Publishing Company issued travel views like this one for a national market eager to see American cities. The glass negative is dated between 1900 and 1906 from the company's own catalog, so it shows the park only a few years after the tomb was completed.
