Laundry hung across the back yard of a tenement at Park Avenue and 107th Street sets this view apart from the other New York street scenes on the board. Around 1900, tenements in this part of upper Manhattan housed large working-class families, and their rear yards were often the only open space for drying wash and letting children play. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large glass negative, documented American cities, towns, and landscapes for commercial sale. The picture is a useful record of how crowded housing and daily domestic work shared the same narrow space.
