Irving Place, a short street in Manhattan's Gramercy area, was known in the early 1900s for its German-language theater and its restaurants, so a police-cleared crowd there would have stood out. This 5 by 7 inch glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency that covered New York street life and news in this period. The record dates the picture to March 28, 1908, but the title and date come from caption data the agency recorded, and they have not been independently verified. Glass plates like this one preserve fine detail of the streetscape and clothing, which makes them useful for studying how crowds and policing looked in the city at the time.
