Recorded as 5/9/08, probably May 9, 1908, this glass negative shows a police parade in New York. The title comes from caption cards and has not been independently verified, so the exact event and route remain uncertain. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a news photography agency that supplied pictures of city life to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Glass negatives like this one were the standard medium for press work of the period, prized for their sharp detail, and the plate itself shows as much about that technology as about the event.
